Art
Year 7
Still Life and Cubism
Students learn basic art skills (viewpoints, proportion, tone, observational drawing – using a grid). – They are also introduced to the term ‘Art movement’ and learn about Cubist artists and create a critical study report and personal response on a cubist artist – Students do a colour wheel (differentiated), learn about tertiary colours, complimentary colours and harmonious colours. – Students use the cubist style as inspiration to create a cubist style painting.
Fish (Ceramics Project)
Students research a theme by creating a ‘Moodboard’ of tropical fish (found images). students develop their skills in composition and seleting images that are relevant to a theme, skills that are used in GCSE. – Students re-visit tonal pencil drawing (use of a grid for accuracy). – Students develop their skills in colour pencil – how to optically mix colour pencil to show a range of tone and detail. – Students create intial design ideas – create quick drawings inspired the the work completed for c/w and h/w. – Final design idea is rendered with watercolour paints. extra detail can be added with colour pencil/colour pens.
Jungle (Print making)
Students are encouraged to complete a tonal pencil drawing independantly. This assesses the students understanding of tonal pencil. – Students continue to develop their skill in artist analysis and writing a critical study (on the artist Henri Rousseau). – students continue to develop their skill in researching a theme by creating a theme moodboard on ‘Jungles’. – students learn how to refine a design idea (based onthier sketchbook work and research) to make it more complex (for a polyprint based on a jungle theme). – students learn basic print/overlay and masking.
Year 8
Cakes (Clay)
Students start the term by completing an ‘unaided drawing’. This is to assess what skills they rememeber from year 7. – A second tonal pencil is completed, this time with a grid and use of tonal scale. -Analysis and critcal stduy on Claes Oldenburg. – Students create intial design ideas – create quick drawings inspired the the work completed for c/w and h/w. – Final design idea is rendered with watercolour paints (re-visit from year 7). Extra detail can be added with colour pencil/colour pens -students use the skills used in the ‘Fish’ Project to create a clay cake. This time the structures require more skill as they are more challanging than the fish to assemble.
Animals (Lino Printing)
Students develop their drawing skill by completing a biro drawing. Like tonal pencil this requires a range of tone; however, it is more challanging as studetns are required to add a variety of mark-making techniques as application is not a smooth as tonal pencil. – Analysis of artwork and Critical study report on Andy Warhol. – Design idea for a lino design – this is based on their sketchbook work. -Students learn how to safely cut out a design out of an A5 lino tile. – Print lino using a range of techniques, including overlaying and masking.
Abstract Portaits (Oil pastel)
Students do another tonal pencil, with use of a grid. students are given one lesson to plan the drawing and are expected to completed for homework. This is to see how their skill have developed during the term. -work on facial proportaions, including how to draw eyes accurately. – Artist research, analysis and critcal study on Sandra Silberzweig. – Create an oil pastel drawing based on the abstract work of Sandraw Silberzweig. Students can challange themselve by adding a range of tone and detail.
Year 9
Skills Project (Mixed Media)
Introduction to the Art course -Students look at a still life theme to learn the skills and processes needed to be successful in art. These include: – Theme and artist moodboards – How to write a critical study – Decorated Critical study – How to select appropriate visuals – Tonal pencil drawing – Pointillism – Biro drawing – Colour wheel/colour theory (recap) – Mixed media final piece.
Mini beasts (Lino printing)
The first of 4 coursework projects. Minibeasts project allows students to re-visit materials and processes used in the ‘skills project’. Students also get the opportunity to explore a range of medums through experimentation, including: -monoprinting -poly-printing -charchol -acrylic painting -expressive drawings -Design ideas/design developments/final lino print designs- using the skill learnt in the year 8 Animals project. They are required to challange themselves by creating a complex design. This is transferred onto an A4 lino tile. The final piece for this project is a lino print. Students print their final piece at Gainsborough House Print studio (students are asked for a donation towards travel, use of the print studio, tuition and use of materials).
Year 10
Pop Art (confectionary)
The second corsework project. Students continue to develop their skills in a range of media to create preparation work for an A1 pop art style canvas. work includes: -Critical study report on a Pop artist – Experimantal work – expressive drawing/printmaking -Acrylic painting/paint experiments -Self taken photographs -Sustained drawing using a material of their choice. -Oil pastel drawing.
Ceramics (Natural Forms)
The third project. this project challanges students to work as comples as possible to create preparation work for a ceramic sculpture on a natural form theme of their choice. work includes: -Artist research on 2D and 3D artists. – Expressive drawing -Sustained drawing -Oil pastel drawing (or another sustained drawing in own choice of materials). -Design ideas of a 3D sculpture – students encouraged to think about shape and form an tranlate this onto their designs with a range of tone.
Year 11
Mock examination
In order to prepare students for the Externally Set Assignment in January, students are given an exam paper (similar to what they will be given in the Externally Set Assignment) with past AQA questions. Students have 10-11 weeks to create preperation work based on the chosen question and theme (using the skills and processe learnt during their time in art). The final piece is completed in a 10 hour mock examination.
Externally Set Assignment Question sent by the exam board (AQA).
Students have 10-11 weeks to create preperation work based on the chosen question and theme (using the skill and processe learnt during their time in art). The final piece is completed over a 2 day (10 hour) examination.
10 Hours examination and time to refine coursework in lessons. All marks submitted by the end of May
