At Stanway we are dedicated to raising student aspirations and supporting them to achieve their full potential. Our careers programme aims to empower students to plan and manage their own futures. As a school we provide students through a variety of activities, opportunities to learn about future education paths, training and employment. This is delivered through a progressive Careers Education programme and is supported by a variety of careers and work related learning enrichment activities. Ultimately we work with our students to develop the skills needed to make successful life decisions and support their transition into adulthood.
Quality in Careers Standard.
Awarded to Stanway in April 2018, the ‘Quality in Careers Standard’ recognises the quality of our careers provision and reflects our commitment to supporting our students with their careers education and enabling them to make informed decisions about their futures.
The Stanway School Careers Provision Aims:

CAREERS DELIVERY
- Careers Education: embedded with-in the PSHE Education curriculum delivered by tutors from year 7 through to year 11.
Careers advice: We have a level 6 Careers Adviser who is available to all students. The Careers office is located opposite Student Services. Mrs Laney is available Monday to Thursday 8:30 – 4:30 and on parents evenings. Parents and students may make appointments for career advice with her. In addition during their school career all students will receive at least 1 individual interview in year 11 to ensure they are prepared for their journey post 16.
Careers, Enrichment Days: during whole school enrichment days year groups will experience in year 9 an Enterprise project, year 10 will follow a Careers day programme lead by Business Mentors from a variety of career paths ‘First Impressions Count – Skills for Success’, Mock Interviews with employers, and they will also have a Post 16 ‘Taster Day’. Year 11 students attend the SIGMA Trust Careers Convention in October, where they make contact with a full range of employers and post 16 education and training providers.
Careers Events: Further opportunities are provided for students to meet with employers/ colleges/ apprenticeship providers throughout the school year in smaller groups focussing on student interests. Trips to different employers and college taster days are also on offer.
Career Links: We work closely with local education and training providers to ensure that students and parents are aware of the different pathways available to them e.g. A-Levels, T-Levels, vocational courses, apprenticeships.
Gatsby Benchmarks
Our careers provision is constantly developing to ensure that students are motivated and prepared to successfully navigate the next stage of their lives. To ensure that the careers provision is engaging, comprehensive and effective we use the Gatsby Benchmarks. The Gatsby Benchmarks were developed by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation using national and international research. They provide guidance for ensuring excellent careers provision in school and all schools are required to work towards these benchmarks.

1:1 Careers Guidance Interview
Mrs Laney is available 4 days a week ( Monday – Thursday) She is Level 6 qualified and will see all year 11 students before the college deadline for applications. Year 8 students are offered the opportunity to book an appointment prior to choosing their options. Mrs Laney is available on Parent Evenings for years 8 -11. Any Student can request an interview either by calling in at the Careers Office or asking their form tutor to email a request.
Post 16 Assemblies and Events 2021/2022
COVID -19
Due to Covid-19 we are unsure as to when or if some of these events will take place. Over the past year we have had to have virtual assemblies and open events from the colleges.
Excursions – currently these cannot take place.
School Visitors – This is under consideration and as soon as we can invite visitors back into the classroom we will.

Post 16 Provider Information Assemblies
During September of Year 11 we invite Post 16 Providers into school to host an information assembly to give students an insight to what is available to them post Stanway School. We encourage all our students to visit as many providers as possible to give them a broad selection to choose from. We also encourage students to apply to multiple providers to ensure they have options come August.

Excursions to Post 16 Providers, Employers and school visitors – Currently unable to happen due to Covid-19 restrictions
We work closely with our local colleges and businesses and have excursions to various local industries to give students an insight into the world of work. We have developed close links with Penguin, Random House Distribution in Frating and Edge Hotel School.
We welcome colleges / Apprenticeship providers into school to have relaxed meetings with students and often have lunch time drop-ins.
Mock Interviews – Postponed
Normally we invite local business people and Stem Ambassadors into school for 2 days to interview our year 10 students to prepare them for the next stage of their journey. Students are requested to complete a CV and letter of application to provide the interviewer with some background information about the student. We try to match students to an interviewer who might best suit their intended career path. Students are always nervous before the experience as this is usually their first interview experience, however they always come away smiling. We always receive positive feedback from our interviewers.
CV/Personal Statements
We offer all students advice to produce a CV and personal statement. Students will work on their CV during year 10 for Enrichment and Mock Interviews. Form tutor run sessions on how to create a personal statement take place during registration at the start of year 11 in order to support their Post 16 applications.

YEAR 7
Prospects – Skills to Ensure Personal Success – STEPS for yr 7
In form time, the programme aims to help students understand more about themselves. (Self Development through careers and work related learning.
Increase knowledge of where to find out information linking to careers.
Build the foundation for understanding the world of work.
Looks at Transition from Primary into Secondary education. Introduces the idea of skills and qualities needed in life..
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers are introduced to the students with BAE Systems roadshow for all students. All students compete in the STEM Race for the Line project.
STEM Club is available to all students
Robotics Club is available to all students
Personal finance and money management are part of the Citizenship program.

Enrichment Day for yr 9 is Enterprise project – Students work in teams to tender for a Catering Contract for a prom. The day focuses on business skills and is supported by NATWEST.
Science Masterclass – NHS Saturday Mornings for 6 weeks. (22 year 9)
