Dual Coding

When I first started teaching I was told that there were 3 different types of learning styles, and students had their preffered way of learning.

What if it is not this black and white, what if you learn using different styles for different subjects. When I think back to my degree level Law revision notes, they were colourful, full of diagrams and laid out in a way so that I could retreieve the information of the cases I needed to when I needed to.

For me, Dual coding is presenting ideas, concepts in a way that covers more than one learning style. In it simplest form, when writing on the board ensuring that you are saying what you are writing and giving the students the opportunity to read your lips at the same time.

In its more complex form it is incredibly refreshing and has made me question the way I currently present information to the students.

Using this method can help to improve memory and retrieval. Teachers should assume that cognitive load theory will be different in many different subjects and teaching and learning age groups. Therefore, how you deploy and use dual coding methods will vary significantly.

Below an article by Mgean Sumeracki looks at the difference between learning styles and Dual Coding.
