Young Musician of the Year

Young Musician of the Year
23/05/2022 John Player

On the evening of Friday 20th May, an enthusiastic audience were treated to an evening of high quality solo performances from students ranging between years 7-11. The evening was modeled on the format of the BBC Young Musician competition, with each performer competing against their peers in the categories of;

  • Junior singer of the year
  • Junior instrumentalist of the year
  • Senior singer of the year
  • Senior instrumentalist of the year

The performances from all of the performers were remarkable, and of a very high standard. It was clear just how much time and effort each performer had spent in practicing and preparing their piece for the evening. The audience were treated to a repertoire including songs from musical theatre and classical works by composers such as Chopin, Mozart and Einaudi on instruments including the Piano, Flute and Clarinet. Our judging panel certainly had their work cut out! To make the tricky decisions, we welcomed Caitlin Morgan (Associate Musical Director of the West End show Six) and Richard Harrison (our former head of Music who is now Director of Music at Colchester Royal Grammar).   Congratulations to all of the students who took part; you made us very proud. The winners of the categories were;

  • Junior Singer; Molly Robinson in year 7 with her performance of ‘Will you be proud?’
  • Junior Instrumentalist; Sophie Cass in year 8 with her performance of Für Elise
  • Senior Singer; Lily Malcolm in year 11 with her performance of ‘Fly, Fly Away’
  • Senior Instrumentalist; Chloe Havers in year 11 with her performance of Douce Rêverie
